The Beginners Guide to YouTube!!

After writing all my other tutorials about youtube, people are still quering about some basic things in youtube that I have not covered in full yet. So here is the beginners guide to youtube.

After you set up an account…

For people who just set up an account on youtube for the first time some of them think “now what…”. So here are some features of youtube explained for the beginner.

How to Upload Videos

You can click on the upload in the top right hand side of the screen and then follow the instructions.

Your Channel…

Your channel is your home page where you can see all the videos you have uploaded, comments, friends, your favourites etc… So your channel is like your little space on youtube. There are many ways to get to your channel the pictures below will show some of the ways.

Now that we are on your channel lets explore some of its features…

Channel Views (What are they)…

The channel view counter is located in the top left hand side of your screen (look at diagram). Channel views are great because that is how many people who have viewed your channel. Meaning that they would have seen all your videos and can view them, which then means more views for you.

Your Feature Video (and how to change it)…

Your feature video is the big video at the top of your channel. By default it is you latest video you upload, however you can change it to one of your other videos if you want.

They way to do this is to click on the video you want to use as your feature.

Then copy the embed URL (view diagram).

Then click on the account button (view diagram for location).

Once it is loaded click on channel design under Manage My Channel.

Click on the option Video URL under Featured Video and paste the copied URL in there.

Then to finish it off click the Update Account button near the top of the page.

The Rest of Your Channel…

Go back to your channel (remember how to do it?) I will explain the rest of your channel briefly for it is quite simple.

Videos – Your videos that you have uploaded to youtube.

Favourites – Videos you have favourited. (to do this when viewing a video just cick on favourite just under the viewing window).

Friends – People on youtube that you are friends with. (To do this will be explianed later).

Subscribers – People who have subscribed to you  get a message when you release a new video.

Bulletins – Messages that appear by you or your friends. (When you post a bulletin it appears on your channel and all your friends channel as well. So it is a great way of adverising new videos. You can also attach a video on the bulletin so people can view your videos that way as well).

Subscriptions – People you are subscribed to. (To subscribe to someone just go on there channel (by the link on the description area) once on there channel the subscribe button is just above the channel view count. Just click on it and our subscribed to them).

Comments – Messages from people.

And that should be all your channel has in it for now. As you get more advanced you can add more stuff to it but we will leave it there for now.

The Account…

Click on the Account button. This page is where you manage your account. Click on Videos, Favourites&Playlists under  Manage My Videos. This page shows you all the videos you have uploaded. Plus all the views comments and ratings. If you click on the comments link (it will be the number)  it will take you to a page where all the comments are displayed and if you wish you can respond to the comments from there.

Go back to the account page. Click on  Messages invites and responses under inbox. This link will take you to where all your messages are stored.

If you click on Friend invites the page will tell you if anybody wants to be your friend and you can approve or disapprove them from there. To send a friend invite yourself go to the channel of the peron you want to be your friend and click on the send friend invite button located in the box where it say connect with… and then wait for there approval.

How to get people to subscribe to you on youtube

Well this is a pretty hard question to answer because it is totally up to the person watching to do it or not. It is the persons feelings on the day as well (are they bothered to do it etc.). But here a few tricks to help remind your viewers to subcribe to your account.

1. Write it in the first comment of your video

This was already metioned in a previous article (how to get channel views on youtube) But again it does apply here to. Because if they are going to place a comment themselves or are just reading the comments they will read yours and this might encourage them to subscribe to you. This works even better if they liked the video as well.

2. At the end of your video remind your viewers of previous or future videos to come and remind them to subscribe.

 This will get them interested in what you do and with the message to subscribe they might just do that to.

3. Post bulletins on youtube with a video attachment with a message to subcribe.

This way works if you have alot of friends because the bulletin goes to all of them as well. And if your friends are doing very well and are getting alot of channel views people will see your bulletin on there channel may view your video and then subscribe.

How to make home stop motion/animation movies

For this tutorail I have decided to devide it up into different sections so everything does not hit you all at once. So lets get started.

 What Type of Stop Animation are You doing?

There are a few different types of stop animation that you can do. There is real life stop animation were the things being animated are real humans. There is clay model stop animation (e.g. Wallace and gromit, chicken run). Lego stop animation where you use Lego people (I do this type). And there are many more different types. This article mainly focuses on clay and Lego because they are the easiest to do however some things may apply to real life animation as well.

 Lighting

The lighting in your film is very important. If the lighting is bad it will make your film look ‘not real’ and that means people will not like it. this is how you should do your lighting set ups for lego and clay animation (real life animation is usually done outside hence no lighting required).

You need a over light (a light that hangs over the top) the a light from the left and a light from the right and if you can a light from behind the camera this will reduce the amount of shandow that the model create. Try and make each light bulb have the same amount of watts as each other otherwise one will be more powerful than the rest and this will give a shadow.

Animation

Animation and the frame rate at which you want to create the movie at go hand in hand. Most stop animation movies go at around 12 frames per second (fps). However you raise this to 15 fps if you want it to go slightly move smoother. You might think taking 12-15 photos for 1 second of film might take a long time but think of the professional stop animators. For 1 day of work (10 hours) they only get 3 seconds of film on a good day.

Everybody that has done stop animation knows that you must move the thing getting animated only slightly but if you have only been doing your stop motion movies at 8fps you have to move it even less.

The camera

Some cameras are great for stop animation while others are pretty bad. An example of a good camera is the “CoolPix L14″ from Nikon it is good because it has a stop motion function built into it that makes the photos straight into a .avi movie. So always ask for that feature. The CoolPix also has quite a close macro range of 10cm. Macro is used in cameras for focusing on close objects. The Macro symbol is a flower. Also get a camera that has a good optical zoom the CoolPix has 3x optical zoom which is ok for stop motion animation. However you can get a bigger zoom if you wish.

A camera that fits at least 2 of the 3 criteria here is a good camera for stop motion movies.

Just for a bit of conveinience get a stand for your camera with adjustable hieghts so you can put your camera just about anywhere.

How to use tags to get views on youtube

This article will give the user a straight forward run through on how to use tags to get views on youtube. 

1. Use words that describe your video.

So if you are putting out a video that featured stop animation for example some good tags would be… stop animation motion. Other tags would be things in the video itself like if the model was made out of clay or if it was a lego stop mtion movie. So as you can see there are quit a few factors in choosing tags.

2. Use as many tags as possible.

 On youtube you can only use a certain amount of tags so when putting in your tags use up as many as you can. Even if you have to use words like awesome or amazing it is better putting them in rather than leaving them out.

 3. Suggested tags.

• Use the name of the video in the tags
• Put in the name of a holiday season in there it might be totally irrelevant but it might fetch extra views

How to get video views on Youtube?

It has come to my attention that people are trying to find out how to get views on Youtube. Well that is a hard topic to do since there are millions or more likely billions of videos on youtube in many different catorgories. However I shall try to give some help for the people out there.

First of all try and make your video have the same theme as a holiday or major public event eg new years eve/day. Since many people search for these things near that time.

When thinking of a video idea try and make it unique (something that has been rarely done). Because if it catches on you will have the first video on the page making your video very popular.

You must put in the correct tags for your video. (tags are the words that describe your video, and if someone is to type in a search on youtube that has your tags in it it will be at the top of the page). If you have the wrong tags no one will look at your video. Also use as many tags as you can to up the chances of getting to the top of the page.

One final thing, when filming the video put your best effort into itso when people view it they will be  interested in your other videos. Because if the video is poor quality people will just reject it.

 So I hope this has helped you with some ideas to get more videos on youtube.

The idea for this post is because 1 viewer of my blog in the search said how to get channel views on youtube. So I have decided to share on how do it. By the way if you were wondering channel views are the amount of people that look at your channel page (the page with all you videos, friends, subscribers on it).

 1. Advertise your channel at the end of your videos.

A short message will do near the end of your video. If you have credits put just after that if not make the advertisment your “credits”. It is also good if you have multiple videos on your account on YouTube. The reason for this is that it makes it much easier to word the message. A good example of a message would be:

Thanks for watching! Go to my channel to view other great videos such as ……. and ……..!

2. Somewhere on the video viewing page (in the comments is the best) remind the views to subscribe to your account.

When you give your video its first view ( if you don’t start to) put it in the opening comment from you to ”do not forget to subscribe”.  This first of all will give you a possible new subscriber but also a very good chance of getting another channel view on Youtube. A good example of a opening comment would be:

Please leave any of your comments, and don’t forget to subscribe!

3. Advertise your account on other websites.

Get blogs on other sites to advertise your account like what I am doing now. It might not get that many channel views on YouTube but it is just another way to get views. 

So I hope that this will get you more channel views in the future as of now BeardStudios is on 1,006 and has only been on for 2 and a half months so lets just say its been getting more than just 1 view a day. A new Stop motion animation movie

At BeardStudios we are more known for the domino tracks that we make, however, we do stop motion movies as well. So we are pleased to announce that a stop motion movie is well under way. We have shot the first few scenes and are starting the main scenes now. The movie shall be complete around the end on January due to Domino day 2 (refer to the Domino Day 2 post).
